Valencia Warns Legal Action Over Netflix Documentary on Vinícius Júnior

Spanish football club Valencia has warned of legal action over a new Netflix documentary about Brazilian forward Vinícius Júnior.

The club says the documentary shows the 2023 incident at their home ground, Mestalla Stadium, in a false and unfair way. Two years ago, Vinícius faced racist abuse during a match at the stadium.

Valencia claims that the documentary wrongly shows a large number of their fans making racist chants. The club says this is not true and does not reflect what really happened. They have officially asked the documentary makers to correct this mistake in writing.

Vinícius Júnior’s representatives clarified on Tuesday that the issue is between Netflix and the production company. They say Vinícius was not directly involved in the documentary’s editing or decisions.

One scene in the documentary shows a social media video where many fans at the stadium are shouting. The video includes subtitles translating the chants as "mono" (Spanish for "monkey"). However, Valencia says the fans were actually shouting "tonto" (Spanish for "fool").

In a statement on X (Twitter), Valencia wrote:
"Due to false and unfair accusations against our fans, we have requested in writing that the production company corrects the content related to the Mestalla incident. We want the truth to be respected and our fans to be treated fairly. We also reserve the right to take legal action."

Still, after the 2023 match, a few fans were arrested for racially abusing Vinícius. Three of them were found guilty and sentenced to eight months in prison. During the court case, the same video clip was shown, and it was argued that it did not clearly prove the racist chants.

During the match, Vinícius became emotional and cried. At one point, he didn’t want to continue playing, but later returned to the field, saying he would keep fighting against racism.

At the time, Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti accused some Valencia fans of being racist. Later, he apologized and said not all fans at the stadium were involved—only a few.
