Nepal has completed 18 years since it began practicing a federal democratic republic, which was established as a result of a peaceful people's movement led by seven political parties and an armed struggle by the then-rebel Maoist party.

On Jestha 15, 2065 B.S., the first meeting of the elected Constituent Assembly officially ended the 240-year-old monarchy and declared Nepal a federal democratic republic. Since then, Republic Day is celebrated every year to honor this historic achievement.
